In Christianity what is the religious significance of food and fasting?

- are there any particular foods which are used in any form of christian worship and what is the significance?
- are there any foods used as part of the celebration of christian festivals and what is their religious significance/symbolism?
on which religious occasions do christians fast? what is the purpose and value of fasting?

All religions teach about the separation of the sacred from the profane (every day). All commandments are based on putting off what is natural, or profane, for what is sacred. Examples include: The belief in an unseen being, loving people who hate you, forgiving people who wrong you, turning the cheek to those that hit you, not to envy your neighbor, not to lust, not to have premarital sex etc. Food is profane and every day, in order to make this sacred we pray at meal time, make sacred foods (not as prevalent in modern Christianity except for communion), and we do the unnatural thing of going without it. Many Catholics will give up a certain foods for Lent. Some Protestants fast as well. In my tradition, Mormonism, we fast of all food and water for 24 hours on the first Sunday of the month and donate what we would have spent on the meals to charity. Mormons also fast whenever they feel a need to, especially when seeking answers to prayers.

the only food for celebration/worship i can think of would be " the communion" (some bread and wine or grape juice). "the communion" is where we remember Jesus’ sacrifice by eating a small piece of bread and drink a small amount of wine or grape juice.

there is no real time that Christians fast. it is really just whenever you feel led to (usually done when seeking guidance or to just get closer to God.) fasting doesn’t have to be with food either, for instance you can fast T.V.
