What is the religious significance of fasting?
We know all spiritual masters resorted to fasting. Is it a way to tame the ego?
Jesus’s 40 days fast.
30 Days Ramadan fasts for Muslims
Budda and Moses Fasted regularly
Abdul Kadir Gelani fasted
So what is up with fasting??? Can it also be a solution to depression? Can it EVEN energize the body?
Thanks very much for answering. Peace, Love and Blessings!
I have fasted the past 2 Ramadan’s and Insh’allah I will continue to fast each year. For Muslims fasting is a way to get closer to Allah. During Ramadan, you abstain from drink and food from dawn till dusk, and should read Quran and pray more during this month than any other. Fasting makes you thankful of what you have and how fortunate you are compared to people who go hungry every day not just during Ramadan and other prescribed days of fasting. Yes, the first few days are the hardest but after about 3 days or so it gets easier and you hardly think about food and such. I guess in a way it can energize you, but to me it energizes the soul rather than the physical body.

Its used as a way to focus on god from what I understand. Its kind of stupid, because most people would think of food than god when fasting XP

No, it is absolutely not a solution to depression.
I am a Muslim. And Allah, gave an order to us to fast.
We fast because we need to find the strength in ourselves.
I hope this answers your question.
And no, it does not energize the body. You feel like you wanna dye after 5 hours of fasting, lol.

the main reason is to teach us self-control and to prove to God that we really need what were praying for and are willing to give up food for it to be answered

It’s just a matter of self-deprivation. People fasted then, as today, also for health reasons. Mormons in the US are supposed to fast one day a month and donate what they would have spent for food to feed the poor.
In a religious context, fasting helps you focus your mind. If done right, it eliminates distraction from your life, for a while at least. It was part of Judaism in Jesus’ time.
‘A way to tame the ego’ is not a bad description!

I fasted for about 37 days but I am an atheist. I don’t know why religionists call missing a couple of days fasting. It is highly energizing, after a couple of days you don’t think about food anymore, excepting when you have to explain to someone why you can’t join them for dinner, and it is very healthy for most people.

The catholic church uses fasting during Lent. It’s about not focusing on eating and focusing on prayer and mediation.

It is about the spiritual growth when ones denies the self/flesh of something. The way of the world is to engorge the self with everything that gratifies the flesh. Its basically a worship of the carnal, animal self. The only reason we don’t like our A hole is cuz we cant reach it. We love our animal self, and refuse to refine our spirit.
We need another flood.

it’s not a solution to depression, would you be friggen happy while fasting?
people dont do it for joy ya know.
they do it as a sacrifice and/or to cleanse the body from sins.
it deff wont energize the body a healthy diet will do that.
what may energize the body is feeling good about yourself, do some church work, pray, i dont know but fasting isnt right buddo.

No, fasting does not energize the body.
Fasting is used to demonstrate control over the physical urges and material world. Fasting without contemplation yields nothing. Fasting with a purpose, exerting our spiritual will over our physical body causes us to be more aware of our spiritual hunger through denying our body.
In other words, it is an ancient trick.
Will fasting help you with anything at all? No, but focusing your spiritual will does.

Strict fasting results in hallucinations which are interpreted as visions. It is not a remedy for depression and cannot energize since it deprives the body of the fuel necessary for energy.

The way I have heard it is that by sacrificing your food (or anything else for that matter, like Lent), it focuses your attention on spiritual things.
It definitely does NOT energize the body. Your body needs food and when you don’t get it, it takes a toll. Maybe it might solve depression.

Supposedly to prove to God that you can take torture and sacrifice. I guess the faster believes that God will give them the sustenance they need to survive. I once frequented a church that most of the parishioners regularly fasted. I was urged by my pastor to fast. I adamantly refused. I deny myself nothing. Bye,I have to go to the liquor store and start grilling my steak.
Oh yea, If you dare fast make sure to drink lots of water.Good luck.
